Smog Isn’t Inevitable — It’s Fixable

Smog is not just an environmental nuisance; it’s a daily hazard. Every November and December, Lahore transforms. Motorways blocked. Breathing gets harder. And the skyline? It’s cloaked in toxic haze.

Smog isn’t new—it’s been around since the early 1900s when people first noticed smoke mixing with fog. Back then, it came from burning coal. Now, it’s evolved into photochemical smog, a much nastier version formed when sunlight reacts with pollutants like nitrogen oxides from cars and factories and volatile organic compounds from gasoline, paints, and cleaning products. The result? Airborne particles and ground-level ozone — dangerous stuff that can mess with your lungs, irritate your eyes, and make life downright miserable.

And let’s not forget Lahore. Over the past five years, smog here has gone from bad to worse. Deforestation, rapid industrialization, and unchecked pollution have put the city on the map — for all the wrong reasons. It’s now one of Asia’s most polluted cities. Winter makes it worse. Cold air traps pollutants close to the ground, while dry conditions and the absence of rain lock them in place. It’s suffocating.

Some experts even point fingers across the border. Factories in Eastern Punjab, India, rely on coal, and their emissions don’t respect national boundaries. They drift over, compounding the problem. But blaming others doesn’t help unless we clean up our own mess, too.

What can we do about it?

Here’s the thing: the fight against smog isn’t just about policies and tech—it’s about us. Every small action adds up.

Start with your car. Drive less. Walk more. Take public transport whenever possible. If you must drive, ensure your car is well-maintained—regular tune-ups, proper tyre inflation, and timely oil changes can significantly reduce emissions. Even the timing of refuelling matters. Fill up during cooler parts of the day—morning or evening—so petrol fumes don’t heat up and contribute to ozone formation. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highlights that ground-level ozone is not only the main ingredient in smog but also a harmful pollutant to people and the environment. Small, thoughtful actions can make a substantial difference in improving air quality.

At home, rethink your choices. Opt for low-VOC paints and cleaning products. Skip gas-powered tools and go electric. Avoid burning waste — compost it instead. And if you can, use energy-efficient appliances or switch to solar.

And trees. We need more of them. Plant one if you can. Better yet, join local afforestation efforts. Trees don’t just look good; they’re natural air purifiers.

For your health? Keep your windows shut when the air quality dips. Invest in a good air purifier. And if you must step outside, wear an N95 mask — it can make a world of difference.

Smog & Lahore – A Case Study

Lahore is a stark reminder of what happens when urbanization outpaces planning. Flights cancelled. Schools shut. Hospitals overwhelmed. And the causes? Everywhere you look, vehicles spewing exhaust, factories running unchecked, and a city that’s growing without green spaces to balance it.

The smog doesn’t just settle on Lahore; it cripples it. It’s not just the factories in India or the lack of trees here — it’s everything combined. Winter locks pollutants in the lower atmosphere, making the air thick with toxins.

It’s tempting to point fingers at others. But the truth is, we need to fix our house first. Cleaner energy policies, stricter emission standards, and urban reforestation aren’t optional anymore — they’re essential.

The Bigger Picture

Smog isn’t just a government problem. It’s ours. It’s personal. Every action counts, no matter how small. Walk instead of drive. Plant trees. Conserve energy. And most importantly, talk about it. Spread awareness.
